A quick synopsis of the Great War, which is covered in the original series, is that the people of The New World and the people of the Old World had differing views on magic, so the barrier was created to separate the two territories and peoples. So The New World (Westland, the Midlands, and D'Hara) was separated from the Old World (where Tanimura is located) by the Great Barrier (a magical barrier made by wizards) thousands of years ago during the Great War which literally could not be crossed. Sorry this is going to be a little long again since I have to reference the Sword of Truth series: I literally just opened Death's Mistress on my Kindle to confirm, the land across the sea is indeed also called the Old World. It's is my favorite series and I have read through it at least 3 times now. You can understand her drive and her devotion to Ricahrd Rahl a lot more. While Goodkind's repetition can get old, and some of the middle books can drag a bit, I think it really helps to flesh out Nicci more. I don't think I recall seeing a map in the beginning of the books like the original Sword of Truth series.Įdit: While you will see mixed reviews on the original series, I would strongly suggest reading the Sword of Truth books if you like the Nicci Chronicles. The lands that Nicci and Nathan travel to are unfortunately not mapped out as far as I know. The Great Barrier separated the New World from the much larger Old World for three millennia, before being destroyed by Richard Rahl in the 40s ACB. The ocean is marked on the map by the squiggly lines at the bottom, and this brings us to really the end of the only official map of the world for the entire series. This brings us to the Nicci Chronicles, where like you said, Nicci and Nathan travel from the Dark Lands (somewhere in D'Hara) south the Tanimura. I only read the book series once so I can't recall what direction they traveled to get to the Dark Lands, but I like to believe it's somewhere in northern D'Hara off the linked map.

I believe the Dark Lands have been kept separate from D'Hara by a wall, making the entire land mysterious to those from D'Hara. This is not labeled on the map, just mentioned in the books themselves. The Richard and Kahlan series, takes place in the Dark Lands which is a sub-territory of D'Hara. This is where Tanimura is located (there is a marker on the map). Part of the original series then spreads into The Old World which you can see in the linked map. So the original Sword of Truth series takes predominately place in The New World which is made up of three territories: Westland, the Midlands, and D'Hara.
